Putin and Biden news - 23.12.2022

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi reported on the progress of diplomatic efforts to form a security zone around the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). The corresponding statement, which was made after the next round of negotiations, was published on the agency's official website.

Commenting on the course of the negotiations, Grossi pointed out that the meeting held in Moscow the day before, which lasted several hours, was another round of discussions aimed at creating a special protective zone at the NPP. The head of the IAEA stressed that the ultimate goal of the negotiations is to prevent a nuclear accident at the plant.

"I continue my efforts to achieve this goal with a sense of maximum urgency this issue]," he assured, noting that he considers it important to exclude shelling in the area of Europe's largest nuclear power plant in order to ensure nuclear safety. He added that the situation remains extremely unstable and could worsen at any moment.

The published statement also reports that the IAEA consultations with Russia and Ukraine on the creation of a protective zone at the NPP are planned to continue in the near future.
